THE SAFETY DANCE it was my mom's birthday yesterday. all week long i was thinking of what to get for her. and everytime i concluded that there was nothing. at all. i thought of robert reich books. but would she come around to reading them? would it be personal enough? i thought of plants and planters. will she like the ones i got? i thought of that one really cool chair at that one really cool store. but does she need it? she'd tell me i really shouldn't have bothered with an unnecessary item. and not in that "oh you shouldn't have *smile*" kind of way. but rather in that "no, seriously. you shouldn't have wasted your time on this" kind of way. i thought of her though. all week. and this summer we had together. we hung out a lot. talked a lot. lots of drives. lots of farmers' markets. lots of "home goods" trips. camping. santa barbara. boston. new york. she was there for it all. what do you get for someone like that? i hope la meditaranea and the long rows of grape vines in fresno were enough. i know they were for me. on a more practical note, classes started today. i had an eight oclock. the fall semester always starts with so much more excitement compared to the spring semester. such foolish novelty. the spring is like that little blonde boy with curly hair with icecream all over his face. it just teases you to go outside and prance in the sun. what, you never prance? |
